The place where we reside has a major impact on our mind and body. And so, it is important to live in healthy and hygienic conditions. And with the same purpose, ‘wellness lifestyle real estate and communities’ were introduced in the year 2000, according to a report by the Global Wellness Institute (GWI) in 2018. The concept of wellness homes acknowledging the importance of being physically and emotionally fit, primarily focuses on human health and well-being in and around the home. As per GWI, wellness real estate constitutes homes and communities that are ‘proactively designed and built to support the holistic health of their residents’.
Today, as per a report by GWI, the wellness real estate sector has grown to $134 billion industry across the globe with over 740 projects across 34 countries. The concept of wellness homes or wellness real estate is said to grow to $180 billion by 2022. The predicted rate of development is 6% annually in the coming years as per a report by GWI. The report is concluded based on a thorough global research constituting various residential, commercial or institutional properties.
Amenities and facilities provided by developers vary from project to project and in accordance with the needs of the community, but the basic features include garden, walking tracks and play area. It comprises of facilities that boost the vitality of life and also aids to reduce the negative impact of hectic work schedules.
Someone rightly said that home is an extension of our body and our body is an extension of our home. As per the study conducted by ArchDaily, William S. Sax in his book about Hindu pilgrimage, defines the concept of home (according to people in South Asia) as, “People and the places where they reside are engaged in a continuing set of exchanges; they have determinate, mutual effects upon each other because they are part of a single, interactive system.”
We tend to spend most of our time in our homes, and so, it essential to have a home that lets you revive your mind, body and soul. With hectic work schedules, sedentary work settings, heavy traffic and pollution can take a toll on your health. To beat the heat of stress and fatigue owing to these factors, daily dose of rejuvenation is a must.
Earlier, people did opt to go to fitness clubs, gymnasiums, yoga and meditation centres on a regular basis. But, it was observed that due to increasing traffic and to save time, people eventually stopped travelling distances for the same. But, the need to maintain health and wellness was yet to be achieved.
Considering these needs of the home-buyers, developers started developing projects that would include health and wellness amenities like a garden, play area, gymnasium, sports complex, yoga and meditation centre, jogging track, etc. Inclusion of such amenities meant high maintenance charges which would eventually increase the cost of investment. Hence, people were initially reluctant to opt for such options. But now, with the trend of everything available at your fingertips and delivered to your doorstep, times have changed and so have the needs of people.
Wellness homes have become the latest luxury trend now. Working millennials and baby boomers, both are now opting for homes with wellness amenities. With increase in demand for health and wellness amenities, many real estate developers are developing projects including all of these facilities. Not only that, but to reduce the pollution created due to construction, sustainable ways of development have been taken into consideration while developing a project. Green building method is one such construction policy that ensures the construction of housing apartments abide to the environment-friendly norms. With various township ventures undertaken by builders that include amenities that help relax your mind and body, wellness homes are the latest pick by home-buyers.
Nowadays, people are going the extra mile to avail wellness facilities. Thus, to overcome the stress caused by a sedentary lifestyle, increasing pollution and other factors that affect the health, good health and well-being have become a necessity today.
Development of wellness homes are more than a trend that needs to be followed. Just like food and clothing, it has become the basic necessity of home-buyers. Also, remember that this isn’t a temporary requirement which would disappear with time but, they are one of the mediums to a massive paradigm shift leading to a holistic lifestyle. Thus, it is rightly said, a healthy home is a key to healthy heart.
